Touch down in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, and it’s time for the ultimate Mongolian adventure. After overnighting in the city, you’ll tackle the Gobi desert, hiking through vast national park and staying in a traditional Mongolian yurt. You’ll explore The Flaming Cliffs, where some of the world’s most exciting fossil discoveries have been uncovered, as well as traversing the landscape by Bactrian camel. Next, it’s time to make for the incredible wilderness of Terelj National Park, camping in a ger settlement set in a beautiful meadow, trying your hand at archery and Mongolian cooking, and savouring a night round the bonfire with a ‘khorkhog’ (a special dish cooked in a pot over the fire).

The following day, you’ll make for the remote region surrounding Lake Khuvsgul, to spend time with a local family, soak up the tranquil surroundings, and perhaps horse ride, hike or swim in the pristine countryside. Your final couple of days in the country are devoted to Ulaanbaatar: after seeing its ancient and modern treasures in two fantastic museums, you’ll spend a day at the Nadaam Festival, a state holiday celebrating the traditional Mongolian ‘three games of men’, archery, horse riding and wrestling.
