It’s Italy’s most iconic horse race, a 75-second spectacle in which Siena’s districts (contradas) compete with bare-back jockeys during three, adrenaline-fuelled laps of the Piazza del Campo. On this three-day trip, you’ll join the crowds and experience the electric atmosphere first hand. The race takes place twice a year, on July 2 (to honour the Madonna of Provenzano) and August 16 (to honour the Assumption of Mary), with our experiences covering both events.
Though the race is the undoubted highlight, the days surrounding it are also action-packed, with race trials, the flags and banners of the various contradas strewn across alleyways and squares, and festive al fresco dinners in each contrada, when long tables line the streets. All our experiences include seated tickets for the race, as well as the option to upgrade your tickets or attend one of the festive contrada dinners beforehand.
